The Peanut is not fancy, nor is it particularly pretty; however it's a decent place to have some (cheap) drinks and meet up with friends. We headed in here to meet some friends on Friday night. I think we got to the Peanut around 8pm or so, and it was pretty packed (generally a good sign in a bar) - no room at the bar, and only one table open, which we quickly grabbed. Now, this place uses pretty much every ounce of space it can, which is understandable but was still super annoying when we had to squeeze past the loud drunk girl at the table right inside the door. (By "squeeze" I mean that she was completely oblivious to her surroundings, and I basically had to walk THROUGH her to enter the bar - not that I'm blaming the Peanut for that, just giving you an idea of how small the actual bar is when all of the tables and whatnot are full.) Thankfully, though, once we claimed our little bit of Peanut real estate, we did have some breathing room. The bartender was doing double duty as the only waitress, and she was pretty surly, but quick to get us our drinks. Pours were reasonable, even if my rum and diet coke was served in a smallish plastic cup. Again, not so fancy. But cheap and relatively strong, so whatever. The wings are indeed scary looking (they're actual WINGS, not the little guys most places serve), but seemed to be a big seller - people at the tables surrounding us were going nuts on them. You definitely get the aroma of the sauce, even from a table or two away. We had already eaten, but one of our friends got the BLT, and she said it was excellent. In fact, she said it was so good that she was seriously considering coming back the next day and getting another one. This wasn't the cleanest, quietest, or friendliest bar I've ever been to, but it does have plenty of atmosphere. If you're in the neighborhood and don't mind a little bit of dive bar action, I'd suggest stopping in.

It was brought to my attention today by a yelp-savvy friend that I joined this here community, and have only reviewed one establishment. And it didn't even involve my favorite thing of forever and all time (that'd be alcohol, kids). I've lived around the corner from this Kansas City drunkity-drunk landmark for years now, and it's the perfect place to stroll when I don't feel like driving anywhere or calling anyone. It smells like old people and shame. Kitch from about every decade of the 20th century carelessly strewn around the joint. Yeah, this qualifies as a "joint," just go with me here. Come with friends or alone, as the staff are a truly friendly and colorful bunch. My personal favorite is Joe. If this is Paddy's Pub, he's their Charlie. The dude will crack you up, and you'll be glad to see him each time you return. And you will definitely return. Why? Their wings are the greatest thing that will ever happen to your mouth. They're massive. Not even chicken wings. No way, these babies were hacked off of unsuspecting pterodactyls. The sauce is perfect. Buffalo hot, and just verging on painful. I'm fairly certain that they use crack in the sauce. That or Jesus Christ is their freaking kitchen manager, because I am drawn to these things like a Lohan to a camera's flashbulb. Cheap drinks, good people, and hot wings that will make you consider leaving your job so you can eat them full time. The only reason I didn't give them five stars is because their chairs are old, and I sink into them when I sit down. I do not like that.

I'm not an expert on Kansas City food, but after having eaten here, I can at least appreciate how these wings would be in the running for best in town. First of all, the wings are huge. They are the type of wing that includes the drummy, the flap, and the little end piece all as a single wing. An order of 6 is more than enough for a single person. The sauce had a good amount of heat and the chicken was crispy and juicy. I also tried the BLT here, and perhaps I am a BLT "purist" but I happened to feel that this particular BLT had too much going on. Obviously it had bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo, but it also had chopped red onion, American cheese, and I added an egg. Don't get me wrong, it was pretty tasty, but it just didn't taste much like a BLT to me. The atmosphere is that of a classic dive bar. It's dirty, loud, and full of the kind of people who are drinking heavily and speaking loudly at 4:30 in the afternoon (i.e. my kind of people). The service is typical of a dive bar (generally friendly with a tinge of surliness). If I were from KC I could anticipate this place becoming the place to watch football, drink beer and eat (quite tasty) wings.

I feel very bad writing this review because I thought this bar was really cool and the people were very friendly... but I am absolutely baffled that this place regularly wins "best wings" in KC. The wings were extremely salty and over-seasoned. I was excited for the homemade bleu cheese but that tasted very odd as well. Everything was just WAY too salty. I felt quite terrible after eating them. I really loved the bar, but the food (wings) were terrible.

Best wings I've had in KC. These are full chicken wings, not the tiny things you get everywhere else. They are huge. Just the right amount of spice, but be sure not to take a deep breath with the wing right in your face. The fries are crinkle cut and we perfectly cooked. A great complement to the wings. Wife had a BLT and loved it as well- and she doesn't even eat BLT's. It's a dive but great food.

There is no better BLT on the planet. The platinum standard.

The last time I went to The Peanut was during the Chiefs disastrous game against the Jets. The disheartening game put a damper at this classic dive bar. But at least we had cheap drinks and solid bar food to get us through one of the most pathetic games I have ever witnessed. I had the cheeseburger and went with the fries instead of the chips. It was a good, basic burger. My husband had the chili dog. He found it to be a bit more greasy than he expected. It was pretty so-so. I'd go with wings, BLT or a burger at The Peanut. The also fries are crispy and delicious. In terms of service, it's noted on the menu that The Peanut is not fast food. It isn't. If you're looking for a quick bite, this is not your place. One person was tending bar and acting as server that last Sunday I was in the bar. I tried to remember if this was usually the case. I can't remember. At any rate, the server did OK covering tables.

Great expectations will almost certainly lead to disappointment. Read all the reviews here. Most rave about the wings. They are big. I don't believe I have ever purchased any that were bigger. I know for a fact that I have had much better though. Who do the folks at The Peanut think they are? Buffalo Wild Wings? Such high prices for average tasting wings! 30 to 40% more expensive than your average bar price for the wings, but with just average taste. Noticeably tougher than an average wing also. On taste alone, I would rate the wings with 3 stars at best, but with all the hype, the price, and the place being a hole, 2 stars is the best I can do for this.

Ok, this had to be done. The Peanut has been one of my favorite places since I moved to Kansas City. They have absolutely the best buffalo wings on the planet. They are huge compared to other places, and the house made bleu cheese dressing is down right awesome. I usually get the triple BLT and then take the leftovers home. If you think it's going to be just another BLT, think again. I also think they have one of the best Reuben sandwiches around. I'm only giving it 4 stars because of the atmosphere. Some people may not appreciate it. The service is generally so-so but that appears to be by design, and I used to be a regular. If you like a divey atmosphere and you like Bar Food, this should be on your list to visit.

Best Hot wings around....About once a month me and the hubby get take out from here. come home chow on some wings with a nice cold Guinness and watch a flick! My kind of date night ;) These are not your typical sized wings either. One dozen is enough for me and the Mr.

I have loved this place since I was a kid. I used to visit KC to see my family every summer, since my aunt owned the store next door, I ate here frequently. I moved to the KC are about 2 weeks ago and could not wait to visit The Peanut. Nothing has changed. The wings are huge and delicious. I am a big fan of their in house Blue Cheese. The only reason they didn't get a 5th star is because of the dust, which I'm sure has been there since the joint opened. If they did some housekeeping the place would be perfect. Seating is limited. Though The Peanut is a bar, it is fine for the entire family. Now they ship world wide!

    Best wings in KC!

  • Jessica S.

Awesome. Great food, non-scary divey ambiance, stellar people watching. Clearly the best wings in KC. They're as big as your face, crispy, awesome sauce, plus the homemade bleu cheese is amazing. Get your BLT with egg. I've been coming here for a few years, and every trip has made me smile. Been to the LS, downtown, and one of the JOCO locations, and this one is by far the best. Very eclectic crowd. Sampling of the people last night for dinner: several guys in suits, one dude in Ninja Turtle sweatpants, one girl dressed in head-to-toe 'merican flag gear, hoodies, typical ladies who lunch (and happy hour) skirts & pearls attire.

This place has some of the best wings I've ever had. Not a bad place to get a few drinks either, has a pretty cool antique feel with a friendly staff. (Plaza Location)

I was here on a Thursday night around 7pm. The venue is small and standing space was elbow to elbow. Frustrating if you're looking to sit down and have a quaint meal, but VERY promising if you're looking for good food. My friend and I debated staying or leaving. After reading the rave reviews about their wings, I wasn't going to leave no matter how bad the seating situation looked. I put in an order for two dozen wings and camped out a table until someone left. The wings arrived and the server laughed. "You ordered two dozen?" he says with a smile. At The Peanut, one wing consists of a drum, wing and tip. Needless to say I was taking home most of my meal. Which was completely fine by me since these wings were some of the best I've sampled since my short time in KC. They have a great buffalo flavor: hot, peppery and not too tangy. The blue cheese that accompanies the wings are also fantastic. I can only guess that its a blue cheese and garlic concoction that is made in-house, unless someone can inform me otherwise. The rest of the reviews on Yelp are true, the wings are fantastic.

I just love local "hole in the wall" type establishments who stray from the mainstream. My pick here is the BLT with fried egg on top.... I do wish they used sliced vs. grated cheese but this is one fine sandwich... Keep on keeping on Peanutttt

  • John K.

The Peanut has two locations in KCMO. This southern location has an identical menu to the downtown location, and a bit less room. That said, it's wonderfully dirty and as friendly as a bar gets. The food is the best bar food in KC. Everything is great: the famous wings and BLT, the brisket sandwich, even the fries are amazing. Don't expect to run any marathons within a digestive period of time, but if you're reading a review of a dive bar at 50th and Main, I doubt you're particularly worried about that. The beer selection is a little austere, but they have what everybody wants, and in a dive bar, that's all that counts. So go! Watch a game. Eat some entire wings. Talk about people you used to know in high school. Maybe you'll even see them.

  • Kelsey C.

This is my type of bar- it doesn't try to over-decorate, and the staff are usually older hippie types who automatically make you fit in and feel welcome. Yes, the wings are phenomenal. Definitely a must. I don't believe the wings are fried- which makes them seem healthier in my mind. There is a limited menu, but I'm sure that this just means they concentrate harder on the items they do have. If you like down home bars with a local flavor and easy atmosphere, check the Peanut out.

A neighborhood type bar - nothing fancy. The wings were excellent hot & spicy. Homemade Blue cheese dressing - wow! Phenomenal fries. Boulevard Wheat on tap - great evening.

No matter which location you go to, this place is great fun. Reasonably priced and tasty food surrounded by good company is how I view this place. The hot wings are their "feature" item but no matter what you order, you can be assured that it will be delivered with a smile. Give it try...

    (4)
  • Stacy L.

People said we would LOVE the wings there. We did not. I want choices and they had none. Take it or leave it with the wings. I think I can find better.

  • Melissa R.

Their wings used to be my favorite in town - huge and spicy with the perfect amount of grease. Unfortunately they seem to have shrunk, or else I ended up with a disproportionate of the tips. However, they are still quite delish, just a bit more work to eat. If you are going to hit up a Peanut, this is by far the best destination in town.

I went here during a world series game back in October and the place was packed. About half the people in the place were standing but no one seemed to be uncomfortable because the place had a very laid back vibe. My friend and I put in our order for some wings and scouted out a table while we waited. When the wings arrived our server smirked at us because we ordered two dozen for the two of us. We didn't know how gargantuan these things were with each piece consisting of the drumette, the wing, and the tip. The couple behind us were a little more experienced and wisely ordered half a dozen to share. Previous reviews here don't lie, the wings here are top notch. They're served piping hot and have great crunch because they don't get soggy like most other wings do. The flavor is superb as well with a great balance of spice, tang and kick. They're just the right amount of hotness for me where it doesn't overpower the flavor of the wings and still gives me a little bit of a sweat. To top it all of the wings are served with a great blue cheese dip that I neglected at first due to my general dislike of blue cheese. This one's different however with a good amount of garlic and chunkiness that compliment the wings perfectly. As we struggled to meet our goal of half a dozen wings per person (the wings make pretty good leftovers too) we saw some eye candy in the form food that others ordered. Seriously, everything that servers were carrying looked great and if I ever get tired of their wings (I doubt it) then I'm sure I can order something else that's pretty great.

Good grief, the wings and BLT are both pretty horrible why anyone would recommend either is a complete mystery to me.

Solid, dive bar with decent food, interesting appetizers, cold beer and an honest pour. The little tacos are very tasty. Always an interesting mix of people as its just around the corner from the KC Board of Trade and the traders celebrate or lick their wounds at happy hour alongside the Plaza business and blue collar crowd. This place gets busy, so if elbow to elbow bothers you go somewhere else. If you have the right attitude for a friendly little crowded joint, skip the downtown location and try this local favorite.

  • Steve S.

best wings in the world, huge, crispy, and make you weep when you give them a big sniff. cold beer, and good friends and/or a game on tv, and it feels like heaven.

The epitome of a dive bar, but they had awesome food!!! My BLT was the best ever, no lie! I hear their hot wings are the signature, and they were the biggest wings I have ever seen! Not very clean, organized or classy but hey, it's you standard, old school bar...no surprises here when it comes to the look of it. Prices are average and worth it. And hats off to the 2 guys running the place for the night for successfully serving a table of us 20 girls as well as keeping the rest of the place happy!

You don't go to The Peanut for its decor - let me tell you. It's a bar with a few specialty bar food menu options that make it worth going. My friend dragged me here last Friday to try their famous BLT's, promising me it would be the best one I've ever had (I haven't had too many in my lifetime - BLT's just aren't my go-to food, you know what I mean?) so I went. Two of her friends from out of town joined us (I would have taken them to a BBQ joint - but they weren't my friends to take!) I think it must have been understaffed that night - meaning the bartender also had to be the server out on the floor (ouch). Lucky for him, there weren't too many people eating, except our group which we suffered for. It took a long time to get out our four plates (three BLT's and one hot wing platter - something they're also known for). But like I said, there was only one guy working and the booze-hounds at the bar were clearly and understandably first priority. The BLT was awesome. They don't skimp on the bacon and it was cooked perfectly, not too crispy but just enough. They layer on the cheese thick and it's shredded - I'm a cheese girl so I loved it even more. The vegetables were fresh (very important since it's half the sandwich). I was impressed because a dump like The Peanut doesn't look like it could make a good meal - but I was wrong to assume so. The crinkle cuts were alright. I'm personally not a fan. The way I see it - with fries out there like Oklahoma Joe's and their mind-blowing seasoned fries or like Winsteads with their thick-cut steak fries - it's hard to justify why crinkle cuts even exist. They are like the arm pit of all french fries - but I guess I didn't come for the fries - it's really just a side note. The wings are HUGE - like giant chicken huge. Genetically modified much? I don't know and I don't care - they are good, no great. But if you order them prep yourself for the full experience: messy hands, burning mouth, sweating body due to the heat, inevitably messy pants...it's all worth it. The server/bartender was laid back, good guy. The crowd is laid back, good people. I'd come again and order the bacon cheeseburger because I'm a fan of bacon and if The Peanut is too, well than it's a damn fine match.

  • Jeff E.

Great wings...big, juicy, spicy. Some people like the BLT but I prefer to just get all messed up with those buffalo-sauce-slathered wings. But don't peak in the kitchen and avoid the restroom if you can. Ignore those possible health-code violations and remember that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger!

Holy wings and BLTs. This place has the BEST BLTs and hot wings I have ever had. My mouth is watering just thinking about them. It's dirty, the chairs are about to fall apart, and they're consistently understaffed but that's part of its charm. Remember to get an egg on your BLT!

Good neighborhood dive bar with cheap drink prices. Most people are fan of the BLT, but I'm a fan of their Bacon Cheeseburger. Don't miss out on the Crinkle Cut Fries, either.

Well, there a lot to be said about a place that throws the biggest party in Kansas City on Labor Day. Aside from that, it's a pretty funny place. It is a very small neighborhood bar located just outside the plaza arena. At first it smells of expired urine, but later you will too and you won't care. Most of the staff give off some weird nostalgic sense reminiscent of "Cheers". This place is not so cool during lunch time but at night it plays a lot of journey and caters to a unique age group ranging from 21-55. Most of the clientele is hard to mingle with throughout the happy hour period. But don't worry, after some Journey on repeat, Miller Lite bottles start breaking and tables start flying. One of the cooks makes a good cheeseburger, but I don't really remember it. Go to the Peanut to deal with a mid life crisis, Michelob Light binge, or possibly the best time of your life. You may have trouble getting to the bathroom on time.

Far from high-flautin', but terrific BLT's. Get the cheese fries, the top it with bacon bits and chopped tomatoes, very good, very bad for you.

  • Kim N.

This is one tiny little place. I think it's hard to find a good, laid back dive bar in this particular area, so I'll cut it some slack. Drinks were strong, beer selection ok (there are tappers in there, off to the right of the bar). We didn't have food, as we love wings, but hate them served as whole wings (as I understood them to be), so we passed. I'd go for an early or late lunch to try a BLT, though, based on the suggestions here.

  • Tyler Z.

I did not like wings until I met Peanuts. Man those wings are just fantastic. There is nothing like showing up to this little bar slightly hungry and sharing wings with friends. They have tons of TVs and always have a good game on. The bar is a bit old. But it's totally worth going to if you're in the area. Fun fact: apparently it's the oldest bar in KC. And has been open since prohibition! I know I'll be here most game days watching the Chiefs, Packers, and Royals play. You can't beat their prices and quality on the wings.

  • Jose C.

A little dive bar with arguably the best, certainly the largest, wings in the area. And the sandwiches aren't bad either. The place is small, and as with any dive bar, the place is a little crowded, and a little loud(due to the lively conversations, music is kept audible but low), also, a little rundown and dirty-looking. They have plenty of tv's, so it's a nice place to watch a game. We went in, grabbed a table, and in a matter of seconds a guy was there with two waters, and ready two take our drink order. Having heard about the wings we ordered a half dozen and a couple of beers. Keep in mind that these are whole wings, and look more like Turkey wings, so each wing is the equivalent of at least three wings anywhere else. Undeterred by the mountain of wings before me I also ordered the single BLT with an egg. And it was delicious! Just what I expected from a dive. It was large and a little greasy; stacked with bacon and cheese and seasoned tomatoes. We ordered the wings dry, with buffalo and blue cheese on the side. The wings in and of themselves are bland, but dip them in their rich home made blue cheese dip, or in good old buffalo sauce and it won't make a difference. ( which I suppose is why they're not seasoned).

I enjoyed the atmosphere at The Peanut...a friend had been raving about the wings so I had to check them out. I had the triple BLT with egg...the BLT was the BOMB! very delicious! Next time I will try the pepper jack vs. shredded cheese. The wings...the world famous wings were extremely flavorful! crispy and the perfect heat! The size of the wings weren't too intimidating...lots of flavor...definitely in the top 3 best wings in KCMO!!

Best wings ever!! I don't usually go to dive bars because they're loud and crowded and somewhat dirty but my husband insisted that the wings were to die for and I have to say it was so worth it! The sauce they use is sheer perfection- it has that spicy flavor that makes your nose run just a little bit but isn't going to kill you and makes you keep coming back. The blue cheese sauce that came with (you get two options- I can't remember the other one at the moment) went so well with the chicken wings. We had a half dozen wings between the two of us and it was honestly too much! Granted we had already eaten dinner and were just going for a midnight snack, but if we were to come here for dinner we would probably not be able to finish a full dozen wings! They are huge and they are so tasty!

  • Emily S.

Forget those other vendors of wings. One trip to The Peanut and one taste of their wings will make you a convert. The Peanut is an amazingly awesome dive bar in the South Plaza neighborhood around a lot of other food places, but it is truly one of a kind! There are many tables for you to sit at, or you can sit at the bar. Additionally, the staff is great and service is good. I've seen all sorts of people here! I've been here for happy hour with my friend, dinner with my brother (on Valentine's Day, woops! We didn't put that together, got mistaken for a couple), a drink with my brother while we waited for our take out, and once for lunch. Consistently, the food is on point. If you want wings (and you definitely do...why else did you come here???) then you'll want to order them right away, like when the server takes your drink orders. The wings take a while, but they are soooo worth it. Also great is the BLT! They add shredded cheddar, which my mom never did, but which is delicious. The BLTs can also be double or triple stacked. They're simple, but the fries and tots are great every time. The last time I went, I ordered a BLT and my dad got the three wing appetizer, and I gave him half my BLT and took a wing. Perfect! I'm fairly certain Happy Hour is domestic bottles, which works for me. If you've never tried The Peanut but you've lived in Kansas City for any amount of time (or if you're visiting KC), I HIGHLY suggest you try this place out; you will not be disappointed!!

  • Camron K.

Hands down the best wings I have ever had. Massive whole wings, that are fall off the bone tender. The wing sauce has just enough heat to it. Amazing bleu cheese or ranch which are house made. Football season is coming up, extremely happy I found this smaller bar.

First time to Kansas City and my first stop? The Peanut. I rolled up decked out in Detroit Tigers gear and the bartender was STILL willing to serve me. This was my first stop on my KC Dive Bar Bar Crawl before the baseball game and it ended up being my only stop. Read the other reviews on here and went with the BLT & fries. Great decision. On my third beer and after a shot of fireball purchased by some Kansas City stud muffin, they weren't going to let me leave without trying the wings. Phenomenal. Ask the bartender just for a sample of one if not too hungry. The bartender Tony was about as legit as they come. The bar was filled with a wide variety of people, and fortunately for the eyes, the men of Kansas City do not disappoint. Then again, it might have been the beer, food-coma, and the lighting... But seriously, any bar that has an action figure of Moses is a bar I can throw a few back at while enjoying every second there.

  • Nadia Burks S.

Huge wings!! The servings were more than generous because they are actually full wings and not just wings cut into separate pieces. The flavor was good but the menu doesn't list options for those who don't care for buffalo sauce though. It was busy, since it is a pretty popular place and so service was slow but friendly. I'd go back for the relaxed atmosphere and a wing craving.

  • Eric S.

One of my favorite KC spots. Best wings I've ever had...make sure to order them extra crispy and don't forget the side of homemade bleu cheese dressing. The Peanut has the best bartenders and staff, games are always on, and there's a bit of the "Cheers" nostalgia to the joint. (It was the original speak easy of KC) I cannot recommend this spot enough. Also, the BLT with egg is excellent, fries are good, and the chili is underrated. Great spot to watch the game.

  • Cole A.

They have the biggest, spiciest, juiciest, fattest wings I've ever dug my teeth into. The sheer fact I used 4 consecutive adjectives to describe them should tell you how much they excite me. After eating just 1, I have to have another and another and another. Don't worry about eating etiquette, you're in good company at this bar. If you want the Cheers atmosphere, this is the place to go. You basically walk into a dive bar with a lot of personality of which could never have been bought but earned with age.

Stopped in at 4:15 for a quick bite before World Series. Place was pretty empty. Ordered chicken wings and a pork tenderloin. After forty minutes and other tables getting their food before us I'd had enough. Went up to the bar and gave server (the only one working) four bucks for my beer and told her we'd waited long enough for our food. Her retort? 'Wings take a long time'. BS. She'd forgotten to turn in our order. We love the other locations but the Main Street location is lacking. Wanted to give them a try after the reopened after their numerous health code violations. Guess it would be better if they'd just stayed closed, wouldn't have been any different.

Great dive bar. Even greater wings which they are famous for. We also ordered the chili cheese fries which were pretty average. Bartender was friendly and sassy. He refilled my water without me asking and brought us cold beer. Overall a good time.

  • Tyler S.

You sit in the dark corner. Your effort to disjoint the full chicken wing becomes a metaphor for your failed marriage. Cheese smothers your fries just like that woman smothered your youth. A cold Budweiser at The Peanut won't turn back the wheels of time, but it's a start.

Best wings I've ever had. It's not just the chicken, it's not just the sauce, it's not just the blue cheese dip... Wait, no... it is all those things. Just not separately! You know what I mean! Dang these wings are good! And honestly it's all their powers combined, these wings are Captain Planet. The buffalo sauce is perfect, tiny bit sweet, lots of tang, breathe it in and choke kinda spice... Ugh. Amazing. It turned my vegetarian coworker briefly back into a meat eater! I kid you not!!!! She had to try a few bites! I love LOVE this place, and I'm only sorry I couldn't stay to try their other meals. But you better believe when I get back to Kansas City, I'm getting back there quick! Helpful tip: don't plan on getting your food quickly. It's a small popular place. Make plans to be chillin' hard for a while. And you GOTTA have the blue cheese. It's amazing.

Hands down my favorite food it KC. Wings?Done. Best Reuben? Done. Burger done perfectly. Seriously best nachos. And do I need to mention the triple BLT? Run here, fast. This might be my only 5 star review ever, I don't hyperbolize.

Whenever I mention that I like wings to anyone from KC they always say, "Have you tried the wings at The Peanut?!??!" Well now I have and they were everything you would want in a buffalo wing. Large full wings in a true buffalo sauce but before they deep fry the wing they must put some type of seasoning on it because it has a little different flavor then the hundred other places that sell wings. If you are looking for a well executed, spot-on, delicious, tommy-boy pleasing chicken wing, I will now ask you, "Have you tried the wings at The Peanut?"

I came here solely for the wings! I was told "best wings in KC"! The wings did not disappoint!!! The place is a little divey inside, and the smell of spilled beer and mop water flooded the air. One person in my group was drinking, and the bartender/server basically ignored us due to the fact we weren't there to drink. I never got a refill on my soda, but he did bring a pitcher of water. I would return and get the wings for takeout next time.

Dive bar with good food? Yes, please. Tasty BLT, and I really generally don't care for BLTs. The drinks are nice, the staff is nicer. Worth a visit if you want an accessible dive bar.

Well this place is a hole in the wall, but it's a hole with the best BLT and Wings in Kansas City, awesome!

If you want to come to a place where they completely ignore you when you are the only table in the place come here! With a whole three items on the menu don't order a hamburger because they are out of buns! Just don't come here.... Please

The building could be burning down and I would still give this place five starts. The wings. Just eat them and thank me. I prefer the Downtown location as it is bigger but the service here is much better in my opinion. Though when everything is less than ten feet away I suppose it makes it easier. If for some reason you don't get the wings, the BLT is always good. Oh and cheese fries. Always cheese fries.

Take it from me, 3 Wings with chili cheese fries is all you need! The wings are of massive perportions- the Chickens are not eating organic, I know that much. The sauce is good, a nice mildly spicy flavor. I don't do hot, but they have a good kick to them. I am glad I read the other reviews though. This is a total dive bar, not a place that looks like they serve great wings! I drove right by it, at first. Then when I saw it, I questioned if they were open. The windows are tinted, so it looked like all the lights were off. Glad I was brave enough to venture in. It was well worth it!

If the Salvation Army opened a bar this is what it would look like. Everything here screams DIVE BAR!!! And it's great. Be careful with their buffalo wings, they don't mess around.

Awesome BLT's, huge wings, cold beer, and a perfect dive bar atmosphere. Will definitely be going back to the Peanut.

BLT sandwich was dabomb. I watched a KU game on the crappy TVs. This place is definitely a D-I-V-E. It has not changed in the last century (I think). VERY CRAMPED, but I got some great service.

Love the wings. Love the owner/bartender guy. Love that my friend lives walking distance from this place. HATE that it's like a hole in the wall. Yes- it has character but I hate that whenever it's "packed" (any more than 30 people), you're absolutely screwed. Easy enough you can be standing up hovering over someone's table. It's a bar with not so great service but the locals love it. Go Peanut!

In the category of KC's dive bars with food, "The Peanut" on Main Street is a clear 5/5. Food is amazingly great on those days when you are feeling a bit hungover and/or you have been inhaling the fumes of a certain plant matter that is being burnt. The best thing about this spot being a good place to go after a rough night is the fact that the food is always 100! At times certain dishes can be overwhelming or a bit sloppy, but that does not matter in the slightest, because the flavor and quality are easily the best of any dive bar in Kansas City. I would give the service a four out of five, but that is only because you are taking care of a little bit better if you are a regular. Not a big deal, the service is still very good even if you're not a regular. The ambience is a five out of five, but this is a five out of five on the dive bar ambience scale...Eat The Reuben sandwich, go there for brunch, grab some nachos, drink some beers and maybe even do a shot or two of Jamison &I promise you that you will want to return frequently to the peanut. However, buyer beware: the other peanut locations are not 5/5s! There is one location that I believe I rated either a two out of five or a three out of five. In other words,, all peanuts are not created equal!

The Peanut is one of the biggest gems in Kansas City. I truly cannot order wings at another restaurant (I'm looking at you, Johnny's Tavern) without wondering why they aren't as big and perfectly spiced. I love the 50th and Main location the most because it's got a divey/friendly feel that a lot of places lack, although we've had good luck at the Old Overland Park location as well. It's a great place to watch a baseball game and hang out with friends. Hell, my brother even had a small birthday get together here because the feel of the place is always positive. The food here will help you pack on pounds in a hurry, so plan your workouts accordingly.

I am a stickler for service, having worked in the service industry. I am also very capable of cooking for my self and my wife. I enjoy to dine out to take a break from serving my self and my wife. Service is NON EXISTENT at the peanut. They do not have a waitstaff. They have one bartender and a bar back. This is fine on a slow Tuesday night. This is not fine on a crowded Sunday when there is 4 football games that people are watching . We arrived at Noon to a full house. We knew it would take a while, but JEEPERS! was it awful. I had to go to the bar to get another beer and to pay my check at the end of the meal. Their wings are fantastic! MESSY as hell and I love them. I love love love love their wings. Best wings in town.... but it just isn't worth it anymore to me to deal with with their awful service. To top it off.... there was no soap in the bathroom to wash my hands off after eating their delicious wings. Shame on the peanut for ruining their brand by not hiring a waiter/waitress to serve their guest.

A monument of food in KC. Wings are fantastic and the best in town as well as a few other gems like the BLT. Definitely not your typical fine dining setting, but it is a wonderful dive bar with great employees and a good atmosphere.

I've been dying to try the Peanut out for years. Heard they have the best wings in town. For whatever reason, I've never made it there despite living only a few locks from their downtown locale. One day we drove by the midtown one, their original location, and decided to stop in. I was determined to try their wings. Hubby opted for some chili. We both got cold beers. The wings are good but not mind blowingly awesome. I could see how people say their the best in the city, sadly. The wings are quite big and have that nice fried crispy texture to them that proper buffalo wings should have. It had a nice pepper coating too, which was unusual but I liked it. The area where it fell short was the sauce. It was not made quite right and there just wasn't enough of it. Proper buffalo wings should have sauce glued to it and then be quite extra saucy. What can I say? Two years of living in Upstate NY has made me a buffalo wing snob. Staff at this location was fine. Overall it's a nice neighborhood dive to grab a drink but not someplace really worth driving out of the way to visit.

Always been a family favorite. Finally made it on a Sunday for brunch to watch a basketball game. We arrived at 10:50 and didn't get service until 11:55, just before brunch ends at noon. When our party of 6 finally ordered we were told the cook had already put away the breakfast and wouldn't take the ingredients back out. The waitress was short with my party when we expressed frustration. The wings have alwayd been my favorite, but it seems like they've been sliding recently and taste like they are frozen now. Sadly we will be back for the wings, but they can't disrespect their clients and expect good business. Bad problems to have for such a classic place. I can no longer reccomend.

The only reason this place isnt getting a 5 star from me is because its way too small. A Friend suggested it and we went there the same night. Best fries and humongous delicious wings. I love eating at new places and this definatly is on my list to visit again. Its also a bar for those of you who don't know .

The Peanut at 50th and Main: The Best Wings You'll Ever Have, Ever. The Peanut is on a south plaza corner next some "more upscale" spots. This particular KC diamond in the rough rubs elbows with Christopher Elbow's Glace, Accurso's Italian, and SPIN! Neapolitan Pizza. Don't be deceived by its neighbors The Peanut is a traditional old school bar. The wings are the star player here. They are massive in portion size. Apparently harvested from alpha-chickens, the wings are well seasoned, crispy, and I'm sure terrible for me. They have one buffalo sauce. Why make a second when the first has just enough buffalo tang, buttery goodness, and heat? I'm also told the BLT is one of the best you can have. But I've never brought myself to ordering one. It would feel like going to a five star steak house and having a burger. I'm sure it's great, but it's not why I'm there. If the wings are the Jordan of the place, then the atmosphere would be the Scotty Pippen. The Peanut is just cozy. It's the yin to the yang of a corporate chain. When you walk in you'll immediately notice there are only 6-8 tables plus a bar top. There are old beer signs, coca cola ads, and sports memorabilia on the walls. One of my favorite moments at The Peanut occurred when I noticed a large framed photograph to the left of the entrance. The photo was five middle aged men enjoying a laugh, a beer, a smoke and some wings at the corner of the bar. I look to that corner of the bar, and those exact five men are there in their same places, as if they are still posing for the photograph years later. It's a microcosm of The Peanut, the years may pass but the bar and grill that once operated as a speakeasy, remains largely unchanged. When it's time to tab out I'm routinely asked, you had how many? Which may not strike many as odd but as someone who's been in the industry it means something unheard of in today's eateries. The Peanut doesn't have a computer system. It's an old register and handwritten tickets. It's nuances like this that make it one of my favorite places in the city. The barstools may be mismatched, the booths may have a tear here and there, the place may be a little dirty or divey, but if you ever wanted to feel like Cliff or Norm chatting with Sam The Peanut is the place to have your wings and cold beer.

I love this place. I actually love all of their locations. The BLT is just perfect, the wings are amazing, the service can get slow on busy days but they are friendly and don't make mistakes so I don't ever mind waiting. The atmosphere is just fun! I had their brunch once at the Sante Fe location and it was pretty good too. The reuben is pretty solid as well.

Bad. Ass. Everything about The Peanut speaks my language. Standing outside, you might overlook it. Don't. That would be a big mistake. I used to think that Cheers was based on The Wheel in Lawrence, but now I wonder whether it might have been The Peanut. The "musts" are the BLT with egg, and the teradactyl-sized wings. You should probably order both (I did).

Typical bar dive but amazing BLTs and wings! Couldn't get any better. This location is certainly a neighborhood favorite. If you live in the area you will almost always run into familiar faces. My version of comfort food are their wings. Definitely the best I've found in the city!

A large group of my buddies arrived at opening on the 30th of December. Very, very good service. Food came quickly and was a good as ever. The restaurant was FILTHY If the owner reads this..... PLEASE CLEAN YOUR RESTAURANT! We arrived at when you opened your door... and the place was a pig sty. The sugar caddy was covered in filth..... the salt and pepper shakers were almost empty.... TOTAL DISREGARD for the safety of your customers. CLEAN your restaurant! It is disgusting....... How you can let your paying customers endure such filth is beyond me.....

The Chicken Wings are soooo HUGEEEE! I mean stacked and delicious. When I tried to order 12 chicken wings the Cook told us that they were too big so i ended up ordering 6. My Girlfriend and I travel to Kansas City often so when we got there, we met a couple of older drunk guys, ordered some fuzzy navels, laughed and chowed down! The guys actually worked there, it was their day off because of the 4th of July! The Chili Cheese Dogs are also Delicious. I would definitely recommend this place! :)

Wings and blts are amazing. I think these are the best wings in the city. Big, juicy and tons of flavor - and the sauce will melt your face off - in a good way. It is definitely divey but is that necessarily a bad thing? Nope. Don't wear your nice clothes if you are like me cause the wings get messy. Service isn't always the fastest so order some beer to keep you busy while you wait.

I don't remember any time in my lifetime when The Peanut on Main Street wasn't there on the corner. It would be my guess that in all that time, very little has been done to update the inside of this little bar, 'cause you wont be seeking them out for the decor which features lots of torn and patched vinyl chairs and scuffed up table tops. It's Dive Bar at it's finest. For all those years we didn't venture in to check them out but last fall (October 2010) I was reading the Pitch and found that The Peanut had the "best BLT" in the city. Boy did THAT get my attention! I LUV bacon, especially when paired with tomato and mayo. So hubby, sis, a daughter, a granddaughter and I made our first trip over to The Peanut at lunch time and judged the hype for ourselves. I immediately went for the BLT, hardly checking the menu, except to find out that I could order extra bacon. And we also got a full order of cheese fries to share with everyone at the table. Hubby & Sis ordered chili dogs and dear daughter and gr-daughter both went with burgers. After all the food was delivered to the table there wasn't much talking for a while. Hubby was sorry he didn't go for a BLT, everyone loved the cheese fries and my BLT was perfection. For a little kitchen (not all the food arrived at the table at one time) The Peanut sure knows how to get the bacon done perfectly. A couple of months later, sis, Hubby and I ended up back at the Peanut on a early Sunday evening. The Chiefs were playing; the bar was much more crowded but sis was craving cheese fries Peanut style and a BLT was calling my name. With The Peanut, what you see is what you get. It's sure not fancy food or decor, but you probably will find yourself going back every so often for the awesome BLT or the cheese fries. Or maybe your special passion will turn out to be the chicken wings or a chili dog.

I have been there for drinks before with friends and everything was fine. But i went there to kill some time by myself on a Tuesday night and i got the worst service that i have ever had in my whole life. The guy bartending and the bar back ignored me for 20 minutes while i was sitting at the bar waiting to order a drink. then whenever I asked for a cranberry vodka he walked away and came back 5 minutes later and said to the barback "I don't know what she wants, I think she wants a cranberry vodka or something"in a really rude tone. Then he just glared at me and continued to help other people and ignore me. after about half an hour of being treated like crap I just left. I I have also been to the other location downtown and the service there was just as bad. the server there brought us our food but that's about it.I had to go to the bar to get our check and it took forever for the bartender to stop talking to his friends so i could pay them. The door guy also was rude while i was trying to pay my tab because apparently i was "in his way". Unless you are best friends with the people who work at the peanut dont go there. The food is not worth it.

This place is perfect. Your typical dive bar and it has been around for forever! Great food and beer. The wings are pretty awesome, but scary looking (see pic). They do take a while to make (20 mins) but well worth the wait while you are sipping on a beer and having nachos with homemade salsa.

I don't drink, but am a sucker for good bar food and that is exactly what you'll find at The Peanut! I've been to two different locations, this one and the one in Lees Summit. I'm a big fan of this location on Main. I liked the smaller feel and kind of "cozy" bar atmosphere. Their wings are some of the best I've ever tasted, but I come back for their fish and chips and burgers. I can't remember my fries at the Lee's Summit location, but the fries on Main weren't the best, I wish they were seasoned a little better and tasted a little more fresh. The great burger made up for the mediocre fries though, it hit the spot. The bartender was really friendly and checked up on my table often. If I lived closer, this is a spot I would frequent, great food, great service, and good atmosphere.

I am definitely a fan of the Peanut. If I may get dirty when I go to a bar then it will truly be favorite. The Peanut reminds me of a bar in my home town. Small, dark, cold beer and nice, easy going bartenders. The beer was cheap. They didn't have too many craft beers, but that isn't really what this bar is about. It is about the wings! I made the mistake of thinking I could tackle a half dozen wings....wrong! These amazing, juicy, spice pieces of heaven were huge! I managed to finish five of them. I now have a better sense of what wings are though - I have been spoiled The Peanut and can't seem to eat wings any other place. Their BLTs are phenomenal as well. I know you're thinking "How do you mess up a BLT?" Well, The Peanut obviously doesn't know how to mess one up because they are great here. The perfect amount of bacon, lettuce, tomato on toasted bread. YUM! Go here, eat the wings, bring your friends, drink cold beer that is very reasonably priced, enjoy!

I came here with high hopes of tasting their world legendary wings. I got my chance however I was pretty disappointed because they were not legendary in the least. This place has RAVE reviews online about their wings. They are indeed HUGE. Gargantuan even. Baby turkey wings. OK, maybe not THAT big. But, hands down THE largest wings I've ever had...But..when it comes to food...size doesn't matter, particularly and especially when it doesn't taste good (please insert referral to almost Every Cheesecake Factory Entree I've ever had the displeasure of tasting here). The issue with the wings was that they were not well seasoned and they were fried so hard at the meat inside was crunchy, hard and extremely dry. Complete culinary turn off for me. Made me also wonder if the wings were old, and they just refried them. But hey, it's bar food. I am going to have to conclude that the Ale House in Orlando Florida still has the best wings I've ever tasted (their Garlic Mt. St. Helen's flavor to be exact---they are plump and juicy, fried fresh to perfection.) I also think that some of my disappointment was due to the atmosphere of this particular Peanuts establishment. I knew prior to going that it would be some type of bar type setting. I just thought that it would be larger, not have a persistent bathroom type stench that constantly wafted over during my meal, and better lighting. It was very "dungeonesque." Yes, I made up that word, but you get my drift. I was also bothered that when I got there although it was very crowded,we were amongst the only two tables that had ordered food at all. Our server, the bartender was the highlight of the meal. He was very awesome! Very attentive and upbeat despite being VERY busy. So in conclusion I honestly will not be back to this particular location (but may try the others) and I honestly cannot recommend the wings, despite their rave reviews by others.

Easily my favorite bar in KC. I used to live within walking distance and I would go every day. The atmosphere is friendly for a dive bar, I have become friends with every employee, and it's always fun to hang with the regulars. If you are a douchebag that pops the collar and starts fights though, you aren't goin to feel welcome. The wings are easily the best I've ever had, the fries are great and the BLT is amazing (and I don't even like BLT normally). Drinks are affordable and they will try to stock a specific beer for you. Joe always keeps at least a sixer of Red Stripe there for me. It's also good to note that they will accommodate your requests, especially if you are a regular. I'm a huge hockey fan from STL and when I didn't have cable I would toto the peanut and they would turn off whatever college sport was playing on one of the TVs so I could watch hockey. They know how to keep people coming back, as I have been there probably 100 times or more. I will continue to come back.

It ain't the cheapest lunch around, but at $9 with a drink at least you get a BLT done right. Wheat toast Mayo Perfectly cooked bacon... I mean perfect. Of course, lettuce and tomato. And some shredded cheddar to set it off. Delicious all year long. : )
